Petters Counseling, LLC

D.D. Petters, MS, LPC

Life can be challenging….change can be difficult, but the journey can be rewarding and empowering.   During my years as a therapist, I have worked with many people recounting painful and disheartening life stories.  Although each story is personally distinct, most depict themes of unhealthy choices and loss of purpose and direction in life.  Throughout life we apply strategies that seem to work for us until we are confronted with situations where our personal “tried and true” strategies no longer successfully work.  We might be challenged by relationships, by moving from one life stage to another or by sudden unexpected changes in our lifestyles.

I work with men and women who want to make changes in their life that lead to more personal contentment and satisfaction, healthier relationships and better life choices.  I give them the tools that they can use to find their own answers and live more productive, happier lives.  My goal is to help clients to discover and utilize their own skills and talents toward hope and healing for their personal lives.

Half of my practice is working with couples who have encountered a situation in their lives that they want to address.   Many of these clients have difficulty communicating their needs and desires and I help them to reexamine and to determine where they want to go from here.  It might be an affair, children leaving the nest, unresolved conflicts or simply a need to bring back the passion into their relationship.  Couples therapy offers them the opportunity to deal with issues, rebuild their relationship and move forward with a new commitment, respect and love for each other.

I also work with individuals and couples who have chosen to divorce and want to experience closure for the sake of each partner’s personal growth and the health of the children.   My work with individuals is a process of grieving the loss, dealing with the former partner through the divorce and after divorce, supporting them during the process and helping the children with the divorce.  As I work with the couple I help them with the closure process and, if there are children, to develop a parenting plan that is workable for them and will benefit the children.

My training includes individual therapy, marriage and family therapy, divorce mediation, collaborative divorce and Internal Family Systems model.
